From Thailand foreigners can enter Laos by land passing any of the existing 6 border passes. However currently the only place where one could get visa on arrival is Vientiane opposite Nong Khai in Thailand. Visa on arrival which is good for staying 14 days can be obtained at Vientiane for US$ 30. You need to have a valid passport and a passport size photo. The border passes between Thailand and Laos written down in the direction of West to East ( or North to South ) are :

- Chiang Khong in Chiang Rai province inside Thailand to Huay Xai in Bokeo province inside Laos.
- Huai Kon in Nan province inside Thailand to Xaingnabouri province inside Laos.
- Nong Khai in Nong Khai province inside Thailand to Vientiane in Vientiane province inside Laos.
- Nakhon Phanom in Nakhon Phanom province inside Thailand to Thakek in Khammouane province inside Laos.
- Mukdahan in Nakhon Phanom province inside Thailand to Savannakhet province inside Laos.
- Chong Mek in Ubon Ratchathani province inside Thailand to Pakse in Champassak province inside Laos.
